Nap-time
In touring the states with the band Beirut, I realized that American audiences feel very much separate from the performer's that they are watching. It has always been my goal as a performer to close this gap between audience and performer. Doing something as simple as playing amongst the crowd, rather than on an elevated stage, can have a profound affect on the audiences psyche. It is a forced intimacy, that is often comforting to most people. In my piece Nap-time, I will conduct a live musical performance with both audience and performer occupying one isolated space. They will all be underneath a sheet, which will be projected upon from the ceiling. The result is an aural and visual structured improvisation that will stress the presence of the group rather than a single performer.
